Many followers of football will readily admit that the modern game has lost all concept of valuation. The €96 million that Real Madrid have spent on Cristiano Ronaldo will succeed in over-inflating the transfer market even further, meaning clubs will be receiving less quality for their cash in what is shaping up to be the most expensive summer in history.
Which is why Lazio could have pulled off a supreme coup by capturing Eliseu Periera from Malaga for the paltry sum of €1m, and why a price tag isn’t always representative of the underlying ability of the purchase.
Humble Beginnings
Born in Angra do Heroismo, Portugal, Eliseu is an old-fashioned, out-and-out winger, who collects the ball on the touchline and runs at defenders. It could be argued that his approach is representative of a dying art, and players of a similar vein are generally exchanged for sums of money significantly higher than that which the Rome club have paid for his services.
His career began with local side Sporte Club Lusitania in 2001, before moving to Portuguese Liga side Belenenses the following season. He took time to establish himself in the first team, making just a handful of appearances in his first two seasons, but after returning from a brief loan spell at Varzim in 2005 he helped Belenenses qualify for the UEFA Cup, and equal their highest league position for thirty years.
Spanish Swap
In the summer of 2007, Eliseu swapped the West coast of Portugal for Andalusia, joining then Segunda Division Malaga. He was instrumental in the Boquerones returning to La Primera after a two-year absence, but many observers felt that the squad was weak and would not have enough experience to survive the stiff competition in one of the toughest leagues in Europe.
Eliseu was however unconcerned with reputation, and after beginning the season as a substitute he quickly established himself once more in the side, where he would be a fixture for the entire season.
His double strike against Recreativo Heulva in October helped his side to a 4-0 win and represented his first goals in La Liga. The following month, he had a superb match at the Bernabeu, opening the scoring and giving Marcelo and Gabriel Heinze a torrid time.
On that occasion he and his team-mates were only outdone by the brilliance of Gonzalo Higuain, who netted all of Real Madrid’s goals in their 4-3 triumph. But both Eliseu and Malaga had proven that they would not be overawed, even against the most distinguished of opposition.
From the wing he netted seven times in 31 starts as Malaga defied all expectations and challenged for a European spot for the majority of the season. Coach Antonio Tapia knew how to extract the maximum impact from Eliseu, allowing him the freedom to roam down the flank and take on defenders at every opportunity.
International Recognition
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz clearly liked what he saw, and offered Eliseu his first call-up for his nation's friendly match with Finland in February. Although he didn't make it on to the pitch on that occasion, in June he finally made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Estonia. It quite literally capped what had been a superb season for the 25-year old.
However, it was clear that Malaga had punched significantly above their weight in 2008/09, and with an extremely restricted budget it would be difficult for them to retain any of their key players. It was revealed that Eliseu had a release clause in his contract, and a host of clubs expressed an interest in securing signature.
Lazio won the race, and while he is not quite of the calibre of Arjen Robben, Eliseu shares many similar characteristics with the Dutchman. His direct style and lightning pace make him a full-back’s nightmare, and his left foot packs a powerful shot making him an attacking threat when cutting inside from the right.
The winger is not without his flaws, however; his distribution from the wings has been called into question, and his six assists could be considered a modest total considering the area of the pitch in which he operates. His style of play is also more suited to England; his pace and power may not translate as readily to the more tactical, defensive Serie A.
But there can be no question that the Portuguese has potential to become an influential player for the Biancocelesti next season, and who knows? He could prove to be the transfer snip of the summer.
